Hotmelt Health & Safety

Feb 28, 2023 | News

Today, the health and safety of operators is of the utmost importance in production environments. At Interlock Adhesives, safety is a key part of everything we do. Our wide range of adhesives include low temperature options which reduce the risk of severe burns. We can provide support to all our customers, quickly and professionally, with any health and safety issues or questions you may have.

We constantly endeavour to improve our technology, with operator safety at the forefront. We have super low temperature adhesive options available, that bond as low as 90 degrees Celsius – hot melt applications are typically between 120-180 degrees Celsius. Not only are they cost saving, but the benefit to operators alone is significant and can prevent serious injury.

Hot melt safety tips:

• Always wear the correct PPE including gloves, eye or face shields and arm coverings – This equipment can protect from contact with hot equipment and adhesive, which can cause severe skin damage. Temperatures as low as 70 degrees Celsius is enough to give a third-degree burn

• Review the safety data sheet and technical data sheet for your product prior to use – These will provide you with essential information about the product and can be provided for all of our adhesives

• Check all equipment for damage before use – any damaged electrical equipment should be treated as a potential hazard. Hot melt nozzles should have no clogs, holes or tears

• Protect surfaces well prior to use – removing adhesive from surfaces can be a difficult job, so protecting all surfaces is advisable

• Never leave equipment unattended whilst switched on – hazards can occur at any moment, so all processes using hot melt adhesives should be closely monitored

• Clean and maintain all equipment to ensure they run smoothly – we offer a range of residue and tank cleaners that can be viewed here

• Should hot melt adhesive come into contact with your skin, dip the burned area in ice water and contact a medical professional. If the adhesive gets into your eyes, seek medical intervention immediately

We keep up to date with all the latest health and safety developments and can provide best practices for end of line safety, including how to address hot melt burns. We can provide material safety data sheets and should you require any, please contact us.
